WeWork goes bankrupt, capping co-working company’s downfall
WeWork Inc., the high-flying start-up, after its failed IPO in 2019, has filed for bankruptcy in New Jersey. The company noted that its assets and liabilities range from $10 to $50 billion. This Chapter 11 filing allows WeWork to continue its operations while fording out a plan to repay its debts. Advertisement
While WeWork once had a sky-high valuation of $47 billion, it soon crashed after the company’s failed IPO. Following this, Founder Adam Neumann resigned as CEO and the company came to face substantial doubt about its ability to stay in operation. In 2021, it filed for bankruptcy protection and as of June 30th had a real estate footprint of 777 locations in 39 countries. However, its occupancy rate decline to pre-pandemic levels.
IWG Plc and Knotel Inc. subsidiaries, who specialize in shared office spaces, have also been adversely affected by the pandemic and filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
Zion Road Condo is strategically located on the arterial Zion Road and is surrounded by many major roads and Expressways. Residents of this apartment complex can look forward to easy access to Orchard Road, Alexandra Road, Central Expressway (CTE) and Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE). So, road traffic is less of a hassle here as drivers can take advantage of multiple routes which make their journeys smoother and less congested.
WeWork is still currently not profitable and in August said it would be renegotiating nearly all of its leases and withdrawing from underperforming locations. To recover from its financial woes, the company made a sweeping debt restructuring deal in early 2023.
WeWork has also taken steps to stay afloat, such as unveiling a 21-storey flagship centre at 21 Collyer Quay in an effort to keep abreast of office-use trends. In addition, news of WeWork’s bankruptcy has so far left CICT & CDL, unaffected by the bankruptcy itself.
It remains to be seen how WeWork will fare in the near future. This high-flying startup, turned business giant, will certainly face a number of challenges in the years to come.
