Reclaimed ‘Long Island’ off East Coast could be about twice the size of Marina Bay: Desmond Lee, with Zion Road GLS potentially opening up even more land

The proposed Long Island, an area of around 800ha projected to be reclaimed off East Coast Park, could provide space for new homes and services for the future generations of Singapore and potential add around 20 km of new coastal and reservoir park. Minister Desmond Lee, Minister for National Development and Minister-in-charge of Social Services Integration, believes this particular opening could allow Singapore to create a bright future integrating coastal protection measures with reclamation plans in view of the long-term effect of climate change.

The concept of Long Island is to “project coastal projection seawards”, allowing the existing East Coast Park to remain largely in its present state, while also creating a enclosed waterbody that will eventually become a freshwater reservoir open to the public for water activities. Zion Road GLS Technical studies and resident engagement are needed to assess the feasibility of the project, and its full planning and implementation will take decades.

Lee Sze Teck, senior director of data analytics at Huttons Asia, believes that at 800ha, Long Island could potentially house between 30,000 and 60,000 new homes with a good mix of commercial, recreation and green elements. He believes the chances of creating a second Sentosa is low, as the government prefers to create an inclusive society and ensure good homes are accessible to all. In addition, the project may potentially increase the likelihood of en-bloc and further investment into transport connectivity, with the possibility of an MRT or LRT extension branching off from the Thomson-East Coast Line to Long Island.
