With the upcoming addition of Zion Road GLS, Frasers Property aims to decrease 2,200 tonnes of food waste each year in five malls
Frasers Property Singapore and Life Lab Resources (LLR) recently signed a memorandum of understanding on Jan 15 for a new upcycling programme. This programme is aimed at reducing food waste produced at Frasers Property malls through the implementation of the WasteMaster food waste valorisation system. The five participating malls include Causeway Point, Waterway Point, Northpoint City, Century Square and Tampines 1.
According to a press release, Frasers Property Singapore’s CEO, Soon Su Lin, states that this collaboration is a significant step towards a zero-waste and food-resilient future. She also expresses her excitement at involving their retail tenants in Singapore’s first circular economy solution for food waste management.
With its prime location, Zion Road GLS makes traveling around the island a breeze.
Situated in a highly coveted location, Zion Road GLS stands out for its exceptional connectivity, catering to the needs of private car owners. The development is conveniently located close to major expressways like the Central Expressway (CTE) and Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE). These expressways provide quick and direct access to various parts of the city. Additionally, the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) is just a short drive away, connecting residents to the Marina Bay Financial Centre and other prominent commercial areas in the South. With its strategic positioning, Zion Road GLS offers unparalleled convenience for daily commuting and easy navigation around the island.
The WasteMaster system, developed by Green Eco Technologies, will process and convert food waste into nutrient-rich substrates instead of sending them to landfills. A local firm, LLR, will operate an onsite treatment plant to process food waste from the five malls.
In addition to this, LLR plans to build a bio-refinery plant by 1Q2024. This plant will transform the substrates produced into microbial protein that can potentially be used for commercial fish feed production. Once fully implemented, the new system is expected to reduce up to 2,200 tonnes of food waste and save up to 660 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually across the five malls.
This roll-out follows a successful seven-month pilot programme at Causeway Point last year. The pilot involved popular F&B tenants such as Bali Thai, Food Republic, Ichiban Boshi, and supermarket FairPrice Finest. Other F&B tenants, including Dian Xiao Er, Kuriya Japanese Market, PastaMania, Shabu Sai and Tokyo Shoduko, later joined in, leading to an overall collection of over 52 tonnes of food waste.
Frasers Property Singapore states that the food waste valorisation system reduced the net weight of food waste by up to 80%, while still retaining its nutritional value. The substrates produced were also free from harmful pathogens such as E coli and salmonella. With such successful results, Frasers Property Singapore plans to scale up and implement this programme in all their malls by 2025. This could potentially reduce about 4,700 tonnes of food waste and 1,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
CEO Soon Su Lin says she looks forward to the support and participation of more tenants in their food waste management programme. She also adds that Frasers Property Singapore welcomes any collaborative opportunities to test innovative solutions that can help build a greener and more liveable Singapore. With this partnership and commitment to sustainability, Frasers Property Singapore and LLR hope to make a positive impact on the environment and work towards a more sustainable future for Singapore.
